The Center for Pelvic Medicine is dedicated to providing superior urogynecologic care to women in the Central Massachusetts area and beyond – with offices conveniently located in Worcester, Marlboro and Webster.   Established by Dr. Diego Illanes, this premier state-of-the-art center provides patient-centered care for the evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor disorders.  Urogynecology, also known as Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology focused on the function and dysfunction of the structures and systems of the female pelvis (for example, urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse).

Dr. Illanes completed both his four year obstetrics & gynecology residency as well as his full three year fellowship training in FPMRS right here in Worcester at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  He and his staff are dedicated to providing caring, dignified and personalized evaluation and treatment options tailored to individual patients.  Our compassionate and skilled Certified Medical Assistant, Hemily Nunez, is a valued member of our team and is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.   The Pelvic Floor Lab at the Center for Pelvic Medicine is staffed by Allison Howard, BS, CCRC, a technician and certified clinical research coordinator with over 20 years of experience in Urogynecology research and urodynamics.

We evaluate and treat these symptoms – which may range from bothersome to life altering:

  • Prolapsing pelvic organs (“bulges”)
  • Stress urinary incontinence (loss of urine with coughing, sneezing, lifting)
  • Urge urinary incontinence (loss of urine with sudden urge to void)
  • Overactive bladder (urinary frequency & urgency)
  • Difficulty voiding
  • Excessive nighttime voiding
  • Painful bladder syndromes, including interstitial cystitis
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Anal incontinence (inadvertent loss of gas or bowel control)
  • Difficulty with bowel movements (splinting, incomplete emptying, constipation)
  • Treatment of mesh-related complications

Treatment options available include those which are conservative such as behavioral (lifestyle & dietary modification), pelvic floor muscle exercises, and pessaries (devices temporarily placed within the vagina) or surgery.  Medications are available for the overactive bladder.  Surgical options offered may be minimally invasive, vaginal, abdominal, laparoscopic or combinations of these.  If surgery is decided upon, you may choose to have your operation where it is most comfortable and convenient for you.  Dr. Illanes is affiliated with:
